“Today news papers report on swift action taken against senior bureaucrats for indiscretion in tabling private recommendations on policy matters through a public electronic platform. Quite naturally my thoughts turn to safeguard my officers from such a calamity. In this regard I would like to advice our serving service members against indulging in free wheeling public debates on matters that are publicly sensitive or can be seen as criticism of Govt policy etc. I write this because I have seen a few officers, some even from this senior group, freely air their views on sensitive matters on social media. A bit of restraint befitting the conduct rules is advisable. Staff under you may also be orally counseled in these matters during training sessions on the Conduct Rules and should be known to them. It is to my mind better to be safe than sorry.”
