Financial Services Secretary Hasmukh Adhia will take over Revenue Secretary in the first week of next month.
Where he will replace Shaktikanta Das, a 1980 batch Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer, who has been named as Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs.
A 1981 batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer, Adhia came to the central government months after Narendra Modi came to power, joining the department of financial services, where he piloted the Jan Dhan Yojana to ensure that each household in the country had at least one bank account.
A gold medalist from IIM, Adhia has keen interest in yoga, backed by a doctoral degree in yoga from Swami Vivekanada Yoga University, Bengaluru.
Adhia will take over as Revenue Secretary, a significant posting considering the very crucial few months left for the department to finalise the contours of the Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) decision and preparatory work on the goods and services tax (GST) gathering steam.
He will now oversee one of the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s pet project GST, take the last few steps to solve the MAT issue and move forward the agenda of modernising the tax administration and making it more friendly.
Adhia has held key positions in the Gujarat administration when Modi was Chief Minister, including Principal Secretary in his office from May 2004 to June 2006.
